Children, Schools and Families Bill R.I.P.?

No committee days have been scheduled for the bill this month, which now lies helpless in its cradle waiting for its inevitable dismemberment in the "washup". So is this the end of the story?

Not if the election is postponed until June - a faint possibility still.

And not if the issue of home education regulation rumbles on - as I judge it will do - into the next parliament.

I will lay some amendments to set out my views on where next.

Thanks for clarifying the situation & reminding us not to take our eye off the ball.
Most especially though, thank you for your represantation of our concerns to the Lords yesterday evening.

I guess this is good news from the perspective of disposing of the legislation, but it does leave the wider question open to be revisited after the election.

A great shame your excellent speech was followed by what came next, although I think this evening I'll have mashed potatoes with something so I can think of the Bill during preparation.

Regulation must never happen. No party must allow it.

The liberty parents have always had to bring up and educate their own children should not be subject to regulation as to how or whether you may take up these liberties.

Regulation of any kind removes liberty and makes home education a matter of permission and government control. The way it is framed in the Bill makes home education practice subject to abitrary control by regulation at the whim of whomever is the secretary of state of the day. It is a totalitarian recipe.

In one of the debates I recall concern being expressed that there was some idea of a possible campaign of civil disobedience. I don't know if this would happen or not. It is not what should concern our lawmakers but where it is brought up it shows the extreme measures being considered if the risk of mass disobedience has to be factored in.

The real certainty that is not being factored in is the certainty that families would be put into the position of having no other option but to resist the measures in order to protect their children from harm at the hands of local officials carrying out the regime that threatens us. That is not a campaign. That is an oppressed people.
Barbara.

Lucas says- Not if the election is postponed until June - a faint possibility still

Very faint i would say any beting man will put his money on May election geting Local elections out of way to. I dont think Brown would want to go to polls after losing many seats at local elections including losing seats in Hull which was a Labour strong hold!

I got a feeling it will all be droped and that we will not have any new laws on home education I still think Tories will win and they have more inportant things to do! such as the debt we in?
We in the clear no new laws and it all be forgoten about home education Home educators 1 government 0 LOL
I see you in the lords thought you done a bit better than last time apart from when you where on about new laws for home education. why did you go on about that? you always spoil it Lord Lucas!

With any luck the whole thing will be binned asap. It's so badly written and has such a poisonous agenda in so many areas that I would wonder why anyone would deal over it in the Wash up. But then I had my eyes opened about the House of Lords watching/listening to the debate.
Thank you for your work on behalf of us EHE families. At least you and Lord Alton understand how much we want to protect the genuine rights of our children.

Thank you so much for your hefty support.

A lot of us are totally on guard now, and ready for the next round.

I, for one, will not compromise my duties as a parent. The state will not dictate my children's future. They will decide that for themselves.

Thanks again.

LL could you post on your blog how long a bill can lie in its cradle?
Or is it now certian that there will be no committee days and it wll wait unti the wash-up?
Why would 3 weeks from 10th May to 3rd June would make such a difference- is it that it will go straight to vote in that time and there would be no wash up?
Also how do you think things would turn out if it did go to vote in the Lords? Thanks

Dear Master Williams

Thank you for your letter of 18th of March 2010 about home education which has been passed to me for reply.
Our propsoals to Legislate for a light touch registration and monitoring scheme for home educating families have now been removed from the Children,Schools and Families Billl to enable some parts of the Bill to be passed into law before Parliament is dissolved.
However ,government remains committed to introducing such a scheme and to the provision of additional support for home educating families.
Yours sincerely

She from the DCSf! bet that hurt to write that letter to Peter
